Strong quake hits southern Atlantic Ocean
An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit the South Sandwich Islands region in south Atlantic Ocean at 0:17 am Sunday (1617 GMT Saturday ), according to a bulletin released by the Hong Kong Observatory.
The epicenter was initially determined to be 57.1 degrees south latitude and 23.6 degrees west longitude, about 2,970 km east- southeast of Rio Gallegos, Argentina.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damages.
