NEW YORK -- A few weeks ago the
Italian-American community lost one of its intellectual pillars in Rudi Vecoli,
one of the founders of the American Italian Historical Association and one of
its past presidents. WeÂąve been witness to a number of wonderful tributes and
obituaries in dailies such as the New York Times and other venues, as well as
our closing announcement on last monthÂąs Italics.
This
week we lost another giant. On the morning of June 30, Rocco Caporale, Emeritus
Professor of Sociology at St.
John’sUniversity
and mentor and friend to many, passed away. Former president of the American
Italian Historical Association, Rocco represented a rare combination of intellectual
acuity and integrity that was accompanied by a strong sense of moral rectitude.
After
many years of reading his work, I finally met Rocco only about a decade or so
ago. I immediately began singing his praises, claiming his edited AIHA volume of
1983 as one of the top two or three among the thirty-plus published at that
time. Rocco‹in what I later witnessed since to be his regular behavior‹without
delay turned the tables on me, recounting in turn what he thought were worthy
things that I had accomplished to date in my career, thus silencing me before I
could finish my encomium of him. Such spirit of generosity is indicative of two
basic things, I would argue: (1) an admirable sense of community spirit that
transcends the personal; and (2) an inimitable benevolence towards his sisters
and brothers that was ever present.
Like
Rudi, Rocco, too, will surely be eulogized in these coming weeks. Just as
important, I would underscore, is that, as we remember and honor both of these
fine individuals, we keep in mind their unbending conviction that subtended
their research, as they sought the truth by asking those questions that brought
them into areas that often interrogated the status quo.
